ITTF Africa President Wahid Enitan Oshodi Increases Efforts Ahead of Africa Cup
As the Africa Cup approaches, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa President, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, has intensified his efforts to modernize tournaments, promote youth development, and make the sport more attractive.
Since taking office in October 2024, Oshodi has taken steps to strengthen competitions and professionalize the structure. He aims to expand the global reach of African table tennis. The tournament, which will be held in Tunisia from February 25-27, provides a platform for him to showcase this vision.
The federation plans to introduce training programs to offer young talents more opportunities. Ahead of the tournament, a Level 3 coaching certification course, the highest in table tennis, will be organized. The tournament will feature a prize pool of $25,000. Additionally, to train young referees and raise officiating standards, the “gold badge referee” system will be implemented.
One of Oshodi’s key visions is to increase the event’s media visibility. Through digital media and television broadcasts, the sport is expected to gain more exposure, attracting greater interest.
In the past, the federation faced challenges due to high travel and logistics costs, preventing many countries from participating in tournaments. To address this issue, the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) has partnered with Ethiopian Airlines as its official travel partner.
Oshodi aims to strengthen the tournament, as participation in recent years has declined. Among the planned reforms is the introduction of a ranking system. Additionally, new steps will be taken to enhance media exposure and sponsorship opportunities.
Sharing his optimism about the future, Oshodi stated: “The road is long, but we are confident that these changes will make a difference.”
