Fighting resumed in El Fasher on Sunday between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after weeks of reduced confrontations. The army, supported by allied forces, repelled a fresh RSF assault from two fronts in the city’s east and southeast.
Heavy weapons were used by both sides, with the army’s air force conducting multiple airstrikes on RSF positions. Explosions echoed through the city, and thick smoke was observed rising into the air. Despite a lull in direct combat over the past three weeks, RSF forces continued their bombardment of civilian and military sites in the area, causing civilian casualties.
In a separate incident, a combined army and allied group intercepted a convoy in the Sudan-Chad-Libya border triangle. The convoy, en route to the RSF, was found to be carrying weapons, ammunition, and other supplies. Some individuals with ties to the RSF leadership were arrested, and the area is being monitored to prevent future smuggling operations. This interception follows an earlier discovery of a convoy with Colombian mercenaries.
While direct battles have slowed in El Fasher, the RSF’s artillery and drone attacks have kept the city under threat.
