A bus belonging to the Kano State Sports Commission veered off the road and overturned near the town of Dakatsalle.
As a result of the crash, 22 people lost their lives. The accident occurred during a return trip from a sporting event held in the southwest of the country.
Among the victims were athletes, coaches, officials, medical staff, and a journalist. In addition, nine people were injured, and only one person on board escaped without harm.
The journey covered a distance of over 1,000 kilometers. Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), expressed deep sorrow over the loss:
“We are heartbroken by this tragedy,”
“These were promising athletes and dedicated officials who had served their state and country with pride. Their loss is immeasurable.”
Among Those Who Lost Their Lives were Athletes Who had Won Medals
Kano State had earned a total of 29 medals at the event, and some of the medal winners were among the deceased. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Kura General Hospital, located south of Kano.
Following the tragedy, the NSC announced that safety protocols at national sporting events would be strengthened. Dikko emphasized the need for new regulations:
“This incident underscores the urgent need for a unified national policy on travel and welfare.”
“From now on, comprehensive insurance is mandatory for all state contingents. All vehicles used for official duties must be mechanically certified and fully insured.”
“These guidelines have been reiterated to all participating states and will be strictly enforced.”
