Ethiopia has reiterated its commitment to supporting peace and stability in neighboring Sudan, as a high-level delegation led by National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) Director General Redwan Hussien delivered a special message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Sudanese leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The delegation, which also included Getachew Reda, Advisor on East African Affairs to the Prime Minister, met with General al-Burhan in Port Sudan — the current administrative seat of Sudan’s military leadership since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023.
Redwan confirmed that the Ethiopian team was “warmly received” and stressed that Addis Ababa remains steadfast in its support for Sudan’s sovereignty and internal efforts toward restoring peace.
“Our visit is a message of solidarity,” Redwan said following the meeting. “Ethiopia continues to back Sudan’s stability, recognizing that peace in Sudan is crucial for the security of the wider region.”
This visit follows a previous official trip by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Port Sudan, underlining Ethiopia’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with Sudanese authorities amid the protracted conflict.
While no details were disclosed about the specific contents of the Prime Minister’s message, officials indicated that discussions focused on regional cooperation, mediation channels, and mutual efforts to counter security threats along the shared border.
Port Sudan has become a central hub for government operations and international diplomacy, following the relocation of institutions from conflict-stricken Khartoum. The Ethiopian delegation’s presence signals the continuation of bilateral communication and Ethiopia’s interest in facilitating long-term stability in the Horn of Africa.
