Botswana Declares Public Holiday After First Ever Gold at World Athletics Championships
Botswana has declared a public holiday following its first-ever gold medal at the World Athletics Championships.
Speaking in New York while attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly, President Duma Gideon Boko announced that September 29 would be a public holiday. This allows the celebration to coincide with the country’s Independence Day on September 30.
Botswana achieved this milestone by winning the gold medal in the 4×400 meters relay in Tokyo. The United States, a ten-time world champion, finished second, while South Africa took third place.
The Botswana team that secured this historic victory included Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, and Busang Collen Kebinatshipi.
With this achievement, Botswana has for the first time made a significant mark on the global sports stage.
