Rwanda has made history as the first African nation to host the UCI Cycling World Championships. This move is expected to be a turning point for the continent’s sporting development.
UCI President David Lappartient echoed this expectation in his remarks:
“Africa is the most represented continent here, with 36 countries participating – more than Europe,” Lappartient said. “Africa is truly awakening to cycling.”
“Cycling is historically rooted in Europe, but we must expand it to all five continents,” he added. “I believe Rwanda can host a World Tour event, and perhaps even elevate the Tour du Rwanda to that level.”
Across the continent, sports such as football, athletics, cricket, and rugby are already on the rise, driven by national successes.
For Africa, sport is increasingly becoming a cultural force. Therefore, this initiative not only advances the continent in a different sporting field but also provides cultural strength and international recognition.
