The Ugandan military has confirmed that two suspected terrorists were killed in a counter-terrorism operation conducted on Tuesday morning following an explosion at the Munyonyo Temple in Kampala. The incident came as thousands of people gathered to celebrate the annual Uganda Martyrs’ Day.
According to the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), one of the suspects was a female suicide bomber armed with powerful explosives. Military spokesman Colonel Chris Magezi said the suspects were captured and neutralised in an intelligence-led operation in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb of the capital.
Security forces including police and army units were immediately dispatched to the scene. Authorities confirmed that several civilians were injured in the explosion, but the exact number has not yet been released.
“Security services are on high alert to ensure that the Martyrs’ Day celebrations continue safely and uninterrupted,” Colonel Magezi said in a statement posted on social media.
The Uganda Police Commissioner also confirmed to local media that investigations were ongoing and that security had been tightened across the capital in response.
The UPDF called on the public to remain calm but vigilant, and urged citizens to report any suspicious persons or activities to the authorities. The incident has raised concerns about possible threats during large public gatherings in the country.
