The Zambian government has initiated steps to evacuate its citizens from Israel in response to escalating regional tensions involving Iran. This move reflects the country’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals amid growing uncertainty in the Middle East.
Speaking before Parliament on Friday, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe announced that 177 Zambians currently residing in Israel have been registered for potential evacuation. The plan is to facilitate their safe passage through the Taba border crossing into Egypt, which has been identified as the primary exit route.
Haimbe clarified that although the evacuation operation has not yet commenced, authorities have finalized all necessary logistical and diplomatic arrangements to ensure that, if required, the process can be carried out swiftly and safely. “No injuries or fatalities have been reported among our nationals in Israel,” the minister said. “Our mission is to remain proactive and ready for any scenario.”
The minister acknowledged the current ceasefire in place between Israel and Iran but emphasized that this fragile calm could be temporary. As a result, the Zambian government is maintaining a high level of preparedness in case the situation deteriorates. “We are not taking any chances,” he added. “The safety of our citizens remains our highest priority.”
In addition to the arrangements for those in Israel, the Zambian government is also monitoring the status of four of its nationals in Iran. Haimbe reported that these individuals have been instructed to observe maximum caution due to the volatile security environment. Contingency plans are in place to evacuate them as well should the need arise.
This proactive approach underscores Zambia’s diplomatic responsiveness and its ongoing efforts to protect its citizens abroad in times of crisis.
