Kenyan authorities have confirmed that wildfires have broken out in the Aberdare and Mt. Kenya forests, two vital water catchment areas, prompting an urgent response from conservation teams.
Firefighters from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) have been deployed to contain the flames, as dry conditions and strong winds fuel the spread.
Emergency Response Underway
“Our teams are working tirelessly to control the fires, which have been worsened by the ongoing dry spell,” said Lucy Mwati, a senior director at KWS overseeing mountain conservation.
She emphasized the priority of preventing further spread and protecting the fragile ecosystems that play a crucial role in Kenya’s water supply.
One of the most active fires has been reported in the Embaringo section of Aberdare Forest, approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Nairobi. Other areas within the Aberdares are also affected, with response teams working to contain flare-ups before they reach more vulnerable sections of the forest.
In Mt. Kenya Forest, authorities are assessing the extent of damage and deploying resources to prevent further destruction.
Increased Wildfire Risk Amid Dry Conditions
Officials have warned that prolonged dry weather has heightened the risk of wildfires in Kenya’s forested regions. They have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately.
Investigations into the cause of the fires are ongoing.
