The World Health Organization (WHO) has nominated Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi of the United Republic of Tanzania as the next Regional Director for its African Region, following a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa held in Geneva ahead of the upcoming World Health Assembly.
The extraordinary session was convened in response to the sudden passing of Regional Director-elect Dr. Faustine Ndugulile in November 2024.
Prof. Janabi emerged as the nominee among four candidates, including Dr. N’da Konan Michel Yao (Côte d’Ivoire), Dr. Mohammed Dramé (Guinea), and Prof. Moustafa Mijiyawa (Togo). His nomination will be submitted to the WHO Executive Board for formal appointment during its 157th session scheduled for May 28–29 in Geneva. If confirmed, he will serve a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal.
In his acceptance speech, Janabi expressed gratitude and pledged to prioritize health improvements across the continent. “Thank you for your trust in me. I will not let you down,” he said. “As we face challenges such as infectious diseases, noncommunicable conditions, climate change, and health financing gaps, we must harness African resilience and unity.”
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated Janabi and thanked the other candidates for their strong campaigns. “Prof. Janabi assumes leadership at a pivotal time for both the African Region and the WHO,” he noted. “We look forward to working with him toward a healthier, safer, and fairer Africa.”
Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Acting Regional Director since the end of Dr. Matshidiso Moeti’s tenure, also extended his congratulations. He emphasized the progress made in African health systems and acknowledged the continued challenges ahead. He assured Janabi of his full support, along with that of the WHO Africa team, during the transition.
Janabi’s nomination marks a critical step in WHO’s leadership in Africa as the region confronts pressing health issues while aiming to strengthen health systems and regional cooperation.
