After failing to secure promotion from the Championship, West Bromwich Albion was planning to revamp its squad.
For this reason, the club was initially considering parting ways with Nigerian international Semi Ajayi. However, they have reportedly changed their minds and are now set to offer the player a one-year contract extension.
Ajayi, who has been with West Brom since 2019, played a key role in helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League. However, the club failed to maintain its top-flight status and was relegated back to the Championship the following season. During this period, Ajayi struggled with injuries and was unable to deliver consistent performances.
Last season was particularly challenging for the 31-year-old defender, as he featured in only 15 of the team’s 46 league matches. Due to his fitness issues and age, it was widely expected that West Brom would release him at the end of his contract.
Recently, Ajayi has been linked with moves to Hull City and Reading. However, neither club has made an official approach. According to the latest reports, West Brom is now preparing to offer him a one-year contract extension.
That said, the club is expected to ask Ajayi to take a significant pay cut. The Nigerian defender currently earns around £850,000 per year, and if he accepts the offer, his salary will be considerably reduced.
