Former South Africa women’s cricket team captain Dane van Niekerk announced in March 2023 that she was stepping away from the national side.
After being left out of the squad for “failing to meet the minimum fitness criteria,” she decided to retire from international duty.
However, she has now revealed that she intends to make a return to the national team.
In a statement shared on social media, Van Niekerk admitted she owed an apology for the way she had handled her retirement:
“I sincerely apologise to Cricket South Africa and the cricket family for how I announced my retirement. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to once again showcase my skills on the international stage.”
She continued:
“I know the standards of the team and women’s cricket continue to rise, and I am ready to work hard to meet them. I return with renewed energy, focus, and a deep sense of gratitude.”
Although she has been away from the international arena, Van Niekerk has remained active in domestic cricket and is now fully prepared to represent the national team once again.
