Beatrice Chebet, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, became the first woman to run the 5000 meters in under 14 minutes. With a stunning time of 13:58.06, she broke the previous world record held by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay by 2.15 seconds.
After the race, Chebet said:
“I’m so happy to be the first woman to go under 14 minutes. After running 14:03 in Rome, I believed I could do it. I told myself, if Faith is chasing a record in Eugene, why not me too?”
Later in the day, Kenya’s star athlete Faith Kipyegon took to the track. She ran 3:48.68 in the 1500 meters, improving her own world record by 0.36 seconds.
With two world records broken in one day, it became an unforgettable moment in the history of Kenyan athletics.
