UN chief calls for peaceful, inclusive elections in Central African Republic
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on citizens in the Central African Republic (CAR) to actively participate in the country’s upcoming nationwide elections and urged authorities to ensure the polls are held in a peaceful, orderly, inclusive and credible manner.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson Farhan Haq, Guterres encouraged all Central Africans to take part in the presidential, legislative, regional and municipal elections scheduled for Dec. 28, while stressing the importance of transparency and respect for democratic principles.
The UN chief also urged all political actors to avoid actions that could incite violence or undermine confidence in the electoral process, highlighting the need to protect the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms during the electoral period.
Guterres underscored the particular significance of the municipal elections, noting that they have not been held in the country since 1988. He said their implementation represents a historic milestone for the peace process and an important step in advancing decentralization and strengthening state institutions.
The statement noted that the UN continues to support national authorities through the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and the UN Development Program (UNDP) as part of wider efforts to promote peace, stability and democratic governance.
Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to assisting the Central African Republic as it works toward consolidating peace and long-term stability.
