The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has inaugurated a rehabilitation and education center in Port Sudan to assist women and girls displaced by Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023.
Part of Türkiye’s “Year of the Family” initiative, the “Safe Home” project was established in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development in Sudan’s Red Sea State and the Bit Makali National Association. It aims to provide psychological support and vocational training to women affected by sexual violence and forced marriages, particularly those from the war-torn regions of Khartoum, Gezira, and Sennar.
The center was officially opened on Thursday, with key figures including Red Sea State Governor Mustafa Mohamed Nour, Turkish Ambassador Fatih Yildiz, and TIKA Sudan Coordinator Galip Yilmaz in attendance.
Governor Nour praised the initiative’s “therapy through work” approach and acknowledged Türkiye’s continued humanitarian efforts in the region. Ambassador Yildiz highlighted the dual role of the center in offering emotional recovery and practical skills, saying, “This facility will help women rebuild their lives and become self-reliant.”
Equipped with tools like sewing machines and cooking equipment, the center is designed to help beneficiaries develop income-generating skills. Yildiz reaffirmed Türkiye’s ongoing solidarity with Sudan, both during and after the conflict.
Since 2006, TIKA has implemented over 750 development projects in Sudan. Coordinator Yilmaz said the new center is focused on empowering vulnerable women to regain safety, confidence, and independence.
