Tunisia is set to play a significant role in increasing global olive oil production for the 2024/2025 season, with an expected 55% surge in output. This growth aligns with global projections of a 30% increase in olive oil production, reaching 3.3 million tons. Tunisia’s olive oil production is forecasted to hit 340,000 tons, with 300,000 tons designated for export, solidifying its position as the world’s second-largest producer, according to the Tunisian Embassy in Brazil.
Ambassador Nabil Lakhal attributes the production boost to favorable climatic conditions, increased rainfall, and expanded irrigation efforts that now cover 90% of Tunisia’s olive cultivation areas. He also highlighted the centuries-old olive trees, well-adapted to Tunisia’s environment, and the government’s strategic support for the olive oil sector.
The embassy reported a notable tripling in olive oil exports to Brazil, growing from $4.5 million to $11.5 million in the first ten months of 2024. However, Ambassador Lakhal believes Tunisia’s potential in the Brazilian market remains untapped, noting that Tunisian olive oil often reaches consumers indirectly through blending with oils from competing countries.
To strengthen its foothold in Brazil, Tunisia is promoting its olive oil at trade events like the APAS Show in São Paulo and planning additional marketing campaigns. Efforts are also underway to streamline trade relations, including registering Tunisian laboratories with Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and expanding partnerships with Brazilian suppliers.
Tunisia, home to over 107 million olive trees spread across 2 million hectares, has long been recognized for its high-quality olive oil. In 2024, Tunisian olive oil garnered over 61 international gold medals, further solidifying its global reputation.
As global olive oil production rebounds, Tunisia’s contributions are expected to stabilize prices and meet rising international demand, fostering greater consumption worldwide. With this momentum, Tunisia aims to enhance its presence not only in Brazil but also across other key markets, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
