Teraco has begun construction on a 120 MW solar power plant project in South Africa. The plant is expected to be completed and operational by 2026.
Located in the Free State province, this project will focus on bolstering cloud and artificial intelligence computing applications.
Teraco has partnered with German solar energy developer Juwi and South African solar developer Subsolar for the construction of this plant. Juwi will be responsible for processes such as PV plant design, procurement, and construction.
Power outages have persisted in South Africa for years, and the country’s electricity grid capacity remains low.
Regarding the construction of this plant, Teraco CEO Jan Hnizdo commented:
“Driving renewable energy infrastructure investment at a time when computing applications such as artificial intelligence are using increased power is an industry imperative.”
“The need is even more acute in South Africa, given its electricity generation constraints and current levels of renewable energy penetration.”
“This initiative aligns with Teraco’s long-term vision of powering digital transformation across Africa. South Africa’s solar power represents a competitive advantage for data centres relative to other locations.”
