Tanzania’s mining sector has experienced significant reforms over the past four years, with a focus on benefiting local communities and enhancing sustainability. A landmark agreement between the Tanzanian government and Barrick Gold Corporation introduced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) requirements and local content regulations to ensure the country’s natural resources drive inclusive development.
The agreement granted the government substantial oversight in mining operations, enabling greater transparency and participation. New policies emphasize empowering Tanzanians through local employment, procurement, and community-focused initiatives. Janet Lekashingo, Chairperson of the Mining Commission, lauded Barrick Twiga Minerals Corporation for leading by example in promoting local content and employing Tanzanians in management roles.
According to IPP Media, Barrick allocates $1.2 million annually to CSR projects, which have funded over 200 initiatives since 2020, including education and health programs. The company sources 82% of its procurement locally and has a workforce that is 96% Tanzanian. Efforts are also underway to amend CSR regulations, streamline digital procurement, and integrate local content teachings into higher education.
Victor Lule, General Manager of Bulyanhulu, emphasized the importance of community investment, noting that Barrick has trained local entrepreneurs to leverage opportunities in the mining sector. The government remains committed to establishing industries that support mining operations, driving economic growth and technology transfer across the country.
