Tanzania is positioning itself to play a key role in the global shift towards net-zero emissions by 2050 through the exploitation and value addition of critical minerals. This is the central theme of the upcoming Tanzania Mining and Investment Conference 2024, which will be held from November 19 to 21 at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam.
The conference, which will be attended by over 1,500 mining stakeholders, will highlight the importance of critical minerals such as graphite, essential for the production of batteries for electric vehicles. Minister for Minerals, Antony Mavunde, emphasized that the Tanzanian government is committed to maximizing the potential of these minerals to drive innovation, preserve jobs, and enhance revenue generation.
With the global transition to clean energy accelerating, driven by the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy, the demand for critical minerals is surging. Tanzania is keen to leverage this opportunity by focusing on value-added mining and production to meet international demand while contributing to sustainable economic growth.
Mr. Mavunde also pointed to global policy shifts, such as the Scandinavian countries’ legislation to ban the production of vehicles powered by fossil fuels, as indicative of the future direction of the industry. He reiterated Tanzania’s commitment to adding value to its critical mineral resources, which will help the country maximize its benefits in the global green energy market.
The conference will be graced by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on November 19, with the event concluding on November 21. The conference will also feature a Mineral Night Gala on November 20, where key stakeholders will be recognized for their contributions to the development of the sector.
Key participants include representatives from major mining firms like Barrick Gold, Helium One, and Anglo-Gold Ashanti, as well as African minerals ministers, researchers, and diplomats from more than 30 countries. The event promises to provide a platform for dialogue on the challenges and opportunities in the mining sector, with a focus on mineral value addition for socio-economic development.
