The Uganda-Tanzania partnership is broadening its scope beyond infrastructure to strengthen private sector collaboration, aiming for sustainable growth, especially in the oil and gas sectors. This was emphasized by Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Ambassador Col. (Rtd.) Fred Mwesigye, at the Uganda-Tanzania Oil and Gas Networking Forum held in Dar es Salaam. The forum, titled Driving Transformation in Uganda and Tanzania’s Energy Vision, was an opportunity to discuss the potential of the oil and gas resources in both countries.
Ambassador Mwesigye highlighted that the collaboration between Uganda and Tanzania is designed not just for infrastructure development but also for creating jobs and fostering private sector linkages. He pointed to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) as a prime example of the successful integration of regional resources for mutual benefit.
The forum, organized by Uganda’s High Commission, brought together stakeholders from both countries to explore ways to deepen cooperation and identify new opportunities within the energy sector. Participants were encouraged to prioritize knowledge-sharing and capitalize on emerging opportunities. Dr. James Mataragio, Tanzania’s Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, emphasized the strategic importance of the EACOP project, calling it a symbol of regional unity that drives economic growth.
Dr. Mataragio also stressed the need for sustainable practices and environmental responsibility in the energy sector, as well as creating an investment-friendly environment. The EACOP team presented updates on the project, highlighting ongoing environmental safeguards and plans for future expansion.
In conclusion, the forum called for stronger regional cooperation, focusing on local capacity building and maximizing the oil and gas sector’s potential for sustainable development in East Africa.
