The party described the election as “fabricated” and claimed that no genuine democratic process took place.
The opposition’s statement came after nationwide protests that erupted during Wednesday’s voting, following the exclusion of Hassan’s two main challengers. Demonstrators tore down campaign banners and set government buildings on fire, while security forces reportedly used tear gas and live ammunition.
CHADEMA alleged that hundreds of people were killed in the unrest, while the United Nations human rights office reported at least 10 deaths in three cities. The government dismissed the higher death toll as exaggerated and defended its response as necessary to maintain order.
Authorities have since imposed a nationwide curfew and restricted internet access. President Hassan, addressing the nation from Dodoma, said unrest would not be tolerated and called on citizens to prioritize peace and security.
