The death toll from the collapse of a five-story building in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam’s busy commercial district, has risen to 29 following the recovery of nine more bodies, a government official confirmed on Tuesday.
Chief Government Spokesman Thobias Makoba provided the update during a media briefing in the Kariakoo neighborhood, expressing condolences to the victims’ families. “The confirmed number of deceased now stands at 29. We continue to pray for the departed to rest in peace,” Makoba said.
Rescue efforts, which began immediately after the building’s collapse on November 16, have officially concluded. Authorities are now focusing on identifying the recently recovered bodies through DNA analysis, with updates to be provided to families as soon as the process is complete.
Despite the tragic event, life in Kariakoo market has resumed. However, two neighboring buildings will remain closed until safety evaluations are finalized.
The disaster, which saw 88 people rescued alive thanks to swift action by emergency services and volunteers, has raised concerns about building safety and regulatory enforcement in Tanzania’s urban centers.
Makoba assured the public of the government’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable, stressing the importance of stricter oversight to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The collapse has drawn both national and international attention, highlighting the urgent need to prioritize safety in Tanzania’s rapidly growing cities.
