A delegation from the State Secretariats of Civil Defense and the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (SEDEC-RJ/CBMERJ) and the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ) visited Tanzania from February 13 to 24. Their mission was to share successful public security strategies implemented in Rio de Janeiro, particularly in handling large events, tourist security, crowd management, and disaster prevention.
The visit is part of a broader diplomatic initiative aimed at strengthening Tanzania’s infrastructure and security, especially with the upcoming Africa Cup in 2027.
Enhancing Emergency Response and Public Safety
Lieutenant Colonel Renato Grigorovski, CBMERJ’s representative, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating:
“The collaboration aims to strengthen emergency response capacity and improve infrastructure to support the growth of tourism in the region.”
The officers from PMERJ and CBMERJ have extensive experience in managing major international events, including World Youth Day (2013), the FIFA World Cup (2014), the Olympic and Paralympic Games (2016), and the G20 Summit. Their expertise is expected to contribute to the restructuring of Tanzania’s public security forces and the retraining of its military personnel.
A Step Toward Safer Tourism
Lieutenant Colonel Wallerson Scherrer of the PMERJ highlighted the significance of the mission:
“Receiving this invitation is a recognition of our expertise in public security. It is an honor to contribute to the reformulation of a country’s tourist security.”
The partnership between Brazil and Tanzania marks a significant step in enhancing security measures, ensuring a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
