Tanzania and Cuba celebrated their long-standing friendship by commemorating the legacy of Fidel Castro, marking the 8th anniversary of his passing. The event, held in Dar es Salaam, reflected on the significant historical ties between the two nations, which were shaped by the shared values of freedom, social justice, and humanity promoted by leaders Julius Nyerere and Fidel Castro.
The Cuban Ambassador to Tanzania, Yordenis Despaigne Vera, highlighted Castro’s revolutionary efforts and his pivotal role in supporting liberation movements in Africa. He also recalled the recent First International Kiswahili Conference held in Havana, which was a milestone in further strengthening the bond between the two countries.
The ambassador praised Tanzania’s unwavering support for Cuba, including assistance during natural disasters like Hurricane Oscar and its role in challenging the long-standing U.S. embargo on Cuba. He also expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by Tanzania throughout the years, especially in the fields of healthcare and education, where Cuba’s contributions continue to play a crucial role.
Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation Chairman, Joseph Butiku, emphasized that Castro’s leadership was instrumental in inspiring Africa’s freedom movements, and the ties between Tanzania and Cuba were grounded in a deep sense of brotherhood and mutual respect.
Walter Bgoya, the Managing Director of Mkuki na Nyota Publishers, described Castro as an influential leader who prioritized the development and education of his people. He called on African leaders to emulate the selflessness and dedication shown by Nyerere and Castro, aiming for sustainable development in the region.
The event underscored the continued strength of the Tanzania-Cuba relationship, founded on shared ideals and historic collaboration.
