Taiwo Awoniyi, who plays for Nottingham Forest, was seriously injured but has recovered after surgery.
The 27-year-old Nigerian footballer was taken to the hospital after colliding with the post while trying to reach a cross during the match against Leicester. Because of this, he was placed in an induced coma but was awakened on Wednesday evening.
His teammate Morgan Gibbs-White celebrated with a shirt bearing the Nigerian striker’s name after scoring a crucial goal in the vital 2-1 victory against West Ham on Sunday. Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo also showed his support by wearing a T-shirt that read, “We are all with you Taiwo.”
The player, who has made significant progress in his recovery, made the following statement:
“This season has been one of the toughest in my career, but through it all, I have felt love. By the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, still fighting, still smiling, and in good spirits.”
“I want to thank my teammates, coaches, staff, and the entire Forest family for their well wishes. Your visits to the hospital lifted my spirits in ways words cannot describe.”
“I’m with you all the way and can’t wait to get back out there with the boys doing what I love.”
