The Sudanese army announced on Thursday that it has discovered multiple mass graves in the Salha neighborhood of Omdurman, where hundreds of civilians allegedly died while being detained by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In an official statement, the military reported that 648 civilians were held in “horrific and inhumane conditions” inside a school. Of those, 465 perished and were buried in mass graves, with some graves reportedly containing more than 27 bodies each.
The RSF has not responded publicly to the accusations.
The discovery comes just days after the Sudanese military declared Khartoum fully cleared of RSF forces, following prolonged and brutal clashes for control of the capital.
The power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese army began in April 2023 and has since led to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. According to the United Nations and local sources, over 20,000 people have been killed and 15 million displaced. However, estimates by U.S.-based researchers suggest the true death toll may be closer to 130,000.
