Sudan has reported a severe cholera outbreak, with over 43,000 confirmed cases and 1,800 deaths as of Thursday, according to the Health Ministry. The outbreak, spanning eight states, including Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and Kassala, highlights the deteriorating health conditions in the war-torn nation.
The ministry recorded 221 new cholera cases and two fatalities, bringing the total to 43,490 infections and 1,187 deaths. Meanwhile, 15 new dengue fever cases were also reported, raising the total to 8,008 cases with 16 fatalities. Dengue fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, causes symptoms like fever, muscle pain, and nausea, while cholera spreads through contaminated water, leading to severe dehydration and potentially fatal outcomes if untreated.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, with clashes between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) displacing over 14 million people and resulting in more than 20,000 deaths. The ongoing violence has severely disrupted healthcare services, worsening the impact of these outbreaks.
The United Nations and local authorities continue to raise alarm over the growing humanitarian crisis in the region.
