South Africa national cricket team player Kagiso Rabada has received a provisional suspension after testing positive for drugs.
The specific substance found in the test and the duration of the suspension have not been disclosed. Rabada confirmed the report and apologized to his teammates, saying:
“I sincerely apologize to everyone I have disappointed. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is far greater than my personal ambitions.”
“I am currently serving a provisional suspension and I look forward to returning to the game I love.”
He added:
“Moving forward, this moment will not define me. I will continue doing what I’ve always done – working hard and playing with passion and dedication to my craft.”
Cricket South Africa released a statement regarding the incident:
“This incident is regrettable. However, Rabada has assured CSA and his fans of his commitment to maintaining professional standards and has reaffirmed his dedication to representing his country with passion.”
Despite the suspension, Rabada — who has played a total of 241 matches for the national team — is still expected to feature in the World Test Championship final between South Africa and Australia, scheduled to take place from 11–15 June.
Rabada had been enjoying a strong run of form, but this development has dealt a significant blow to his professional career.
