South Africa has begun preparations to host the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games.
For this reason, the country plans to enter into a “continuous dialogue” with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Following a cabinet meeting on November 12, it was stated that this dialogue process represents the “critical preliminary and exploratory phase” necessary to advance South Africa’s hosting ambitions.
Additionally, the statement read, “The Cabinet is confident in South Africa’s readiness to host the Olympics given the country’s existing infrastructure.”
Having hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and made a significant impact on football fans, South Africa will organize the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027.
The event will take place across several cities, including Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, with 10 matches scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Furthermore, South Africa is preparing a bid to host the 2035 Rugby World Cup.
Nevertheless, the Olympics is a massive event, and the cost of organizing such an event is expected to be very high. The 2024 Paris Games reportedly cost France approximately €9 billion.
