South Africa has launched its G20 presidency with a strong focus on tourism. The country hosted the first virtual meeting of the G20 Tourism Working Group on Wednesday, bringing together senior officials, policymakers, and industry experts. The meeting aimed to promote sustainable tourism growth among member states.
The South African Tourism Department stated that this session is the first in a series of discussions leading up to the G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in September. These talks will shape policies to support tourism start-ups, small businesses, and artificial intelligence in travel. Officials also discussed improving air connectivity and increasing investment in the sector. They emphasized the need for financial support to promote equality and sustainability.
Resilience in tourism was another key focus. Delegates explored strategies to help countries recover from global disruptions while ensuring long-term growth. The discussions also addressed how Africa could enhance its role in the global tourism industry.
As the first African nation to hold the G20 presidency, South Africa is leading with the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.” Officials highlighted the country’s commitment to using this leadership role to benefit the continent. The goal is to drive tourism policies that create economic opportunities and strengthen Africa’s global position.
The second G20 Tourism Working Group Meeting is scheduled for May 11-13 in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by another in Mpumalanga on September 10-11. The G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting will take place on September 12 in Mpumalanga. These discussions will finalize strategies for sustainable tourism growth and global cooperation. South Africa’s leadership in these talks is expected to highlight Africa’s tourism potential and drive long-term economic benefits for the region.
