South Africa are on the verge of their first away Test series victory against India in 25 years. At the end of day four, India need 522 runs to win.
Having been bowled out for 201 in the first innings, India must bat flawlessly throughout the final day to avoid losing the match. Otherwise, they will suffer a second 3-0 whitewash in their last three home Test series.
India lost 3-0 to New Zealand last October. Before that result, they had not lost a Test match at home to any team for 12 years. South Africa had won the opening match of the two-Test series in Kolkata by 30 runs.
Resuming on 26-0, South Africa slipped to 77-3 after losing three wickets for 18 runs in the space of 13 overs. However, Tristan Stubbs’ 94 proved instrumental in stabilising the innings. With Wiaan Mulder contributing 82 runs, the lead approached 500 by the end of the day.
In reply, India lost two wickets within the first 10 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught behind off Marco Jansen, while KL Rahul was bowled by Simon Harmer.
India failed to build any momentum afterwards, and South Africa maintained their advantage.
