Somalia is set to sign an agreement with Türkiye on 1 March for onshore oil exploration, expanding their existing energy cooperation. This deal will mark a significant step in Somalia’s efforts to develop its oil sector with Turkish investment and expertise.
Türkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed that the agreement will grant Türkiye exploration rights for Somalia’s onshore oil reserves, building on their ongoing offshore exploration efforts.
On 25 October 2024, Türkiye’s Oruç Reis seismic research vessel arrived in Somalia after a five-month journey, starting offshore oil and gas exploration in three maritime blocks. So far, 50% of the offshore exploration work has been completed, and full data collection is expected within a year.
The new agreement is expected to boost Somalia’s economy, attract foreign investment, and enhance infrastructure and energy sector growth. Experts believe Türkiye’s role will be crucial in technology transfer, capacity building, and exploration success.
