Somalia has voiced strong opposition to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after Somaliland leader Abdirahman Irro was given a platform at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, warning of possible diplomatic measures in response.
Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi reiterated Mogadishu’s stance that Somaliland is part of Somalia and emphasized that its grievances should be addressed through internal dialogue. He also condemned what he described as external interference in Somalia’s sovereignty, stating that the government is considering steps to address its ties with the UAE. However, he did not elaborate on what actions Mogadishu might take.
Irro’s appearance at the summit marked his first international trip since assuming office. During the event, he advocated for Somaliland’s recognition, citing its governance and strategic position. He also highlighted the region’s relations with the U.S. and U.K., expressing hope for formal recognition.
His visit has further strained Somalia-UAE relations, which have already been tense due to Abu Dhabi’s direct engagements with Somaliland and Puntland. While Mogadishu has yet to specify its response, the latest developments signal a growing diplomatic dispute over Somaliland’s international outreach.
