On Monday, during the General Conference in Vienna, Somalia officially became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Somalia stated that its membership reflects the country’s commitment to advancing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, marking a significant milestone in its development.
A statement from the office of the prime minister described the event as “a historic moment for our nation, underscoring our commitment to peaceful nuclear engagement and sustainable development.”
Aweis, Somalia’s Minister of Information, expressed optimism, saying, “Somalia looks forward to working with the international community to leverage nuclear technology for the benefit of our country while ensuring the highest standards of safety and security.”
He added that Somalia is now a member of the UN’s nuclear watchdog.
He further emphasized Somalia’s dedication to using nuclear energy responsibly to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
Somalia has become the 179th and newest member of the UN nuclear watchdog.
