The Gautrain Management Agency has unveiled a new initiative, KlevaMova, aimed at making train travel more affordable for qualifying passengers. The offering provides a 50% discount on train fares to individuals from households with an annual income of R350,000 or less, as well as to students under 25, school pupils, pensioners, and recipients of disability grants from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
The move comes in response to rising transport costs, which continue to place pressure on household budgets—particularly in communities located far from urban economic centers. Findings from the Gauteng Household Travel Survey revealed that in 2019/2020, almost 60% of households spent more than 10% of their income on public transport, up from 55% in 2014.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela welcomed the launch, stating: “I am pleased to announce that Gautrain fares will now be more affordable.” She emphasized the importance of affordable and accessible public transport in easing the cost of living and opening up economic and social opportunities for citizens.
Diale-Tlabela explained that KlevaMova is part of a broader government strategy to broaden access to the Gautrain, attract users from a wider range of income levels, and ensure that cost does not prevent residents from benefiting from safe and efficient public transport.
The discounted fares will apply to weekly, monthly, and return train trips only. Eligible passengers must apply by submitting supporting documents and will undergo a verification process before approval.
Gautrain is an 80-kilometre (50-mile) higher-speed express commuter rail system in Gauteng, South Africa.
