President Paul Kagame has assured Rwandans of unwavering protection for the country’s security and sovereignty amidst regional instability, particularly in neighboring DR Congo. Speaking in his end-of-year address on December 31, Kagame emphasized Rwanda’s commitment to defending its interests by all necessary means.
“We will always protect Rwanda’s security and sovereignty,” he stated, addressing challenges such as threats from the FDLR militia and broader regional instability. Kagame called for comprehensive, long-term solutions to the root causes of regional conflicts, urging collective efforts to achieve lasting peace.
Reflecting on 2024, Kagame highlighted Rwanda’s progress 30 years after the Genocide against the Tutsi, praising the nation’s resilience and shared commitment to rebuilding. He acknowledged Rwandans’ active participation in presidential and parliamentary elections and expressed gratitude for their role in the country’s continued development.
Kagame also addressed the Marburg virus outbreak, which claimed 15 lives, expressing condolences to affected families and thanking healthcare workers and partners for their contributions. The outbreak, officially declared over in December, recorded a 22.7% fatality rate—the lowest in the disease’s history.
The President celebrated Rwanda’s achievements, including hosting the International Automobile Federation (FIA) General Assembly—the first such event on the African continent—and advancing its bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Kagame highlighted the potential of motorsports to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods across the nation.
Looking ahead, Kagame encouraged young Rwandans to continue shaping the country’s future, reminding them of their capability to achieve remarkable progress. He extended best wishes to Rwandans and their families for 2025.
