Rwandan President Paul Kagame has arrived in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, for a two-day official visit upon the invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
According to a statement from the Presidential Office, the two leaders are initially scheduled to hold a private meeting at the El Mouradia Palace. In addition, extensive bilateral talks are planned with the participation of relevant delegations. The visit is expected to end up in the signing of various agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and Algeria.
During his visit, President Kagame will commemorate those who lost their lives during Algeria’s struggle for independence and lay a wreath at the Maqam Echahid (Martyrs’ Memorial). He will also visit the National School of Artificial Intelligence (ENSIA), which currently hosts five Rwandan students enrolled in artificial intelligence and data science programs.
President Tebboune will host a state dinner in honor of Kagame, marking one of the most significant events of the diplomatic interaction.
The visit follows previous high-level interactions between the two states. In December 2024, President Kagame and Tebboune met at the Continental Forum on Education and Youth Employability, where they explored ways to expand bilateral cooperation in the areas of education, defense, agriculture and infrastructure.
Earlier in January, Algerian Ambassador Mohamed Mellah pointed at upcoming agreements between the two countries, including visa exemptions and enhanced military and commercial cooperations. That same year, the Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army, General Said Chanegriha, visited Rwanda and reaffirmed his commitment to deepening defense partnership. His visit included meetings with Rwandan defense officials and visits to memorial sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Museum of the Campaign Against Genocide.
The last official visit of Rwandan President Kagame to Algeria was in 2015.
