Rob Walter, the white-ball coach of South Africa’s cricket team, the Proteas, has resigned. The 49-year-old coach shared that his resignation is due to personal reasons.
The 49-year-old coach took over in March 2023 and led the Proteas to the semi-finals of the World Cup that year. He also took the team to the T20 World Cup final both last year and this year. Last year, South Africa lost to India, while this year they were eliminated by New Zealand.
Walter was an important part of the team. He announced his departure with the following statement:
“Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,”
“The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey.”
“While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights.”
Cricket South Africa CEO, Pholetsi Moseki, also commented on Walter’s resignation:
“Rob played a significant role in the rebuilding of the Proteas brand on the international stage.”
“During his two years in charge, we have witnessed a significant increase in faith in South African cricket, largely due to the team’s performance.”
“His professionalism and work ethic have been exemplary, and he will undoubtedly be missed.”
The Proteas are set to play a T20 series against Zimbabwe in July, followed by three T20s and three one-day internationals against Australia in August.
They will then travel to England for three ODIs and three T20s in September.
