Massive crowds filled the streets of Pretoria on Friday, demanding that the South African government shut down the Israeli embassy and expel its diplomats, following Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla and fresh U.S. sanctions targeting Pretoria’s pro-Palestinian stance.
Protesters Demand Diplomatic Break with Israel
Demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and chanting anti-war slogans gathered outside the Israeli embassy, accusing Israel of committing grave violations of international law.
The protesters also called for the release of South African nationals detained during Israel’s raid on the flotilla — a civilian-led convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.
“What happened on the Mediterranean is not just an abduction, but a crime against humanity,” said protester Nkrumah Kgagudi, echoing the growing public outrage across South Africa.
Flotilla Raid Sparks Outrage
The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of 44 boats and nearly 500 activists, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces earlier this week as it attempted to deliver food and medical aid to Gaza.
Among those detained was Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, along with author Zukiswa Wanner and activist Reaaz Moolla.
Israel’s military confirmed that all vessels were seized and escorted to port, a move that triggered widespread condemnation from human rights groups and governments worldwide.
Ramaphosa Calls for Immediate Release of South Africans
President Cyril Ramaphosa demanded the swift release of the detained South Africans, calling Israel’s interception of the flotilla “a clear violation of international law.”
“The flotilla symbolized peaceful solidarity with Gaza, not confrontation with Israel,” Ramaphosa said. He urged that the aid onboard be allowed to reach Palestinians facing severe humanitarian hardship.
Rising Tensions with Washington
South Africa’s firm support for the Palestinian cause has increasingly strained its relations with the United States.
President Donald Trump’s administration this week imposed economic sanctions on South Africa, accusing it of “promoting anti-Israel agendas” and undermining U.S. strategic interests in the Middle East.
Analysts warn that continued defiance from Pretoria could invite further U.S. measures, potentially threatening trade and investment ties with one of Africa’s largest economies.
Domestic Support, Global Consequences
Despite mounting international pressure, the South African government has doubled down on its stance, maintaining that justice and human rights must guide its foreign policy.
Activists, however, are pushing for stronger action — including the complete closure of the Israeli embassy and suspension of diplomatic relations.
“We cannot condemn oppression in our history and turn a blind eye to it now,” one protester said, referencing South Africa’s own anti-apartheid struggle.

Organizers plan more nationwide demonstrations in the coming weeks, vowing to keep pressure on the government until decisive action is taken.
But observers caution that Pretoria’s growing isolation from Washington could have long-term economic implications — leaving the nation caught between moral solidarity with Palestine and geopolitical realities shaped by global power politics.
