A season that began like a dream is now dangerously close to ending without a single trophy.
Orlando Pirates had managed to progress in all major competitions: the South African Premier Division, the CAF Champions League, and the Nedbank Cup.
However, in recent weeks, their hopes in each of these tournaments have faded one by one.
First, they were knocked out of Africa’s biggest competition, the CAF Champions League, after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Egypt’s strong side, Pyramids FC, in the semi-finals.
Then, on Sunday, they suffered another blow—this time in the Nedbank Cup final—losing 2-1 to their archrivals, Kaizer Chiefs.
What makes the defeat more surprising is that Orlando Pirates had dominated most of their previous encounters with Kaizer Chiefs this season.
Now, the only title hope that remains is the league championship. But even that looks out of reach: Sundowns are 15 points ahead with three more matches played, and they only need two more wins to seal the title.
Looking ahead to next season, there is uncertainty surrounding the club. With head coach José Riveiro expected to depart, Pirates could lose momentum.
Although the team has a number of talented players, it remains to be seen whether they can find consistency and build long-term success.
