A Malta-flagged products tanker has reportedly been boarded by pirates off the coast of Somalia, according to a statement by the maritime security firm Ambrey.
The report said the attackers approached on a skiff and opened fire before boarding the vessel. Ambrey added that the pirates were operating from a hijacked Iranian-flagged dhow, a common tactic used to extend their range at sea.
The incident marks another sign of resurgent piracy activity in the waters off the Horn of Africa, an area once notorious for hijackings before international naval patrols helped reduce such attacks over the past decade.
