More than 20 people were killed in an attack in Oromia’s Horo Guduru Wollega zone, specifically in Abe Dongoro district, Tullu Moti kebele, on March 28, according to local officials and residents. The assault was followed by the abduction of three individuals.
A resident of the area, speaking anonymously due to security concerns, reported that the attackers targeted local militia forces, causing gunfire that led civilians to flee. However, as they attempted to escape, many were shot in their homes and surrounding areas. “At least 20 people were killed in a horrific manner,” the resident said, adding that several others were injured.
Authorities Blame Fano Militants
Abe Dongoro Deputy Administrator Ayana Waqe confirmed the death toll and attributed the attack to Fano extremist militants. However, he clarified that it was not an act carried out by the Amhara community as a whole. “These were armed individuals hiding in rivers and forests, attacking, killing, and looting with the support of Fano militants from the Amhara region,” he said.
Ayana explained that the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) had previously taken strong measures against such armed groups, reducing violence. However, after ENDF’s withdrawal, security was transferred to the Oromia Special Forces and local militia, and attacks intensified.
Worsening Security in Horo Guduru Wollega
Horo Guduru Wollega zone has been a hotspot for conflict, with ongoing clashes involving the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and Fano militias. Residents have also reported forced conscription under the Gachana Sirna system, where farmers are required to join militias to access agricultural supplies.
Reports indicate that tensions have risen in districts bordering the Amhara region, particularly in Abe Dongoro, Jarte Jardega, and Amuru. In October 2023, an in-depth analysis highlighted how security in these areas had worsened due to frequent armed confrontations.
Local authorities have called for immediate intervention, warning that killings, looting, and destruction of property have become widespread in the region.
