A high-security prison in central Chad descended into violence late Friday, leading to the escape of more than 130 inmates during a deadly riot that left three people dead and several others, including a provincial governor, wounded.
The incident occurred at a correctional facility located about five kilometres from Mongo, the capital of Guera province. According to local authorities, the chaos erupted when inmates overpowered staff, stormed an office, and seized firearms, triggering a shootout with prison guards.
The violence unfolded just as the regional governor was visiting the prison. He was reportedly caught in the exchange of fire and sustained injuries. His condition has not been disclosed.
“Around 100 inmates escaped, three are dead and three more injured,” said Hassan Souleymane Adam, Guera’s provincial secretary general. However, a separate source from within Mongo’s local administration later confirmed the number of escapees had reached 132.
The cause of the uprising appears to stem from mounting frustrations among the prison population over food shortages.
Justice Minister Youssouf Tom stated he was on his way to the region and would deliver an official update once on site. “Accurate information will be available once I arrive in Mongo in the coming hours,” he told reporters by phone.
As of Saturday morning, security operations were underway to recapture the fugitives, as authorities face growing scrutiny over prison conditions and facility security across the country.
