There have been changes in the FIFA World Rankings for national teams.
Morocco, at 12th place, topped the African teams, while Senegal, in second place on the continent, secured the 19th spot globally.
Egypt made slight progress, moving up a few positions to 32nd globally, while Algeria rose to 36th. The reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, Côte d’Ivoire, climbed to 41st.
Nigeria, despite moving up one spot from 44th to 43rd, fell out of the top five African teams for the first time in six months. Tunisia, another African team in the top 50, moved from 52nd to 49th place.
The most notable change in the rankings was the dramatic decline of the Super Eagles. Nigeria, which began 2024 in 28th place, owed this high ranking to their progress in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they reached the final but lost to Côte d’Ivoire.
Despite the loss, their progress showed that they were a strong team. However, 2024 proved to be a year of disappointment for Nigeria. The Super Eagles played 15 matches in 2024, winning 9, drawing 4, and losing 5.
While they secured a spot for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, they have struggled in World Cup qualifiers. Currently, they sit in fourth place in their qualification group, and their chances of reaching the tournament are rapidly diminishing.
On the global stage, the team ranked first is Argentina, the previous World Cup champions. Spain, which overtook France, is now second. England holds steady at fourth, and Brazil rounds out the top five.
Other notable shifts in the top 10 include the Netherlands (6th) surpassing Portugal (7th). Belgium (8th), Italy (9th), and Germany (10th) maintained their positions. The next update to the global rankings will be published on July 10th.
