The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals will feature 16 teams starting from 2026.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the expansion, increasing the number of participating teams from 12 to 16.
Originally launched in 1998, the tournament was held with eight teams until 2018. In 2022, the number was raised to 12. This latest change highlights the growing importance and recognition of women’s football across Africa.
Even this year, the total prize pool increased by 45%, reaching $3.45 million. The champion team earned a $1 million reward.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe commented on the developments, saying:
“I am pleased with the progress we’ve made in women’s football. My starting point is ensuring that both men and women are paid well and can build a career through football. I can assure you that women’s football will continue to improve because it is an area we are focusing on a lot.”
