Meta, OpenAI, and Orange SA are launching a project to train artificial intelligence models in African languages.
Africa is home to a third of the world’s languages, yet most of these languages are underrepresented in AI tools. If this integration proves successful, much of Africa will gain easier and more effective access to AI and be able to use it efficiently.
The project will initially focus on Wolof and Pulaar, languages spoken by 22 million people in West Africa. Through these models, Orange aims to strengthen its position in the Middle East and African markets. The company plans to offer these services for free in public health, education, and local business centers.
Languages spoken widely in Sub-Saharan Africa, such as Swahili, Lingala, and Bambara, appear to be the next target for the project. OpenAI will provide early access to cloud infrastructure to accelerate the development process.
