South Korean tech giant Naver has announced plans to establish an artificial intelligence data center in Morocco.
The initiative is expected to be powered by renewable energy and is planned to reach a capacity of 500 megawatts.
Chae Sun-joo, CEO of Naver’s strategic business unit, made the following statement about the project:
“This collaboration will be an important turning point for Naver’s cloud and AI technologies to expand beyond Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East to the European market.”
The project will initially involve the installation of a 40 MW supercomputer. This supercomputer will later be equipped with Nvidia’s latest Blackwell (GB200) GPUs.
THE COUNTRY’S LOCATION AND VISION WERE SUITABLE FOR THE PROJECT
Morocco was chosen for this project due to several strategic reasons, including its proximity to Europe—only 15 km across the Strait of Gibraltar—and its extensive undersea fiber-optic network.
The country’s vision to generate 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 also aligns with the project’s sustainability goals.
AN IMPORTANT STEP TOWARDS BECOMING A REGIONAL DIGITAL HUB
Morocco also aims to position itself as a regional digital hub. A separate 386 MW mega data center project located in Tetouan stands as another example of this vision.
The new data center is expected to create employment opportunities, strengthen the digital ecosystem, and support national digital sovereignty.
