Egyptian authorities, in coordination with Sudanese authorities, have successfully secured the release of Egyptian nationals abducted by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The operation followed instructions from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to take all necessary measures to ensure their safe return.
The freed Egyptians were transported from the conflict zones in central Khartoum to Port Sudan before being safely returned to Egypt.
This is not the first time Egyptian nationals have been captured in Sudan’s ongoing conflict. Earlier in the war, RSF forces detained Egyptian soldiers stationed at Merowe Air Base for joint military exercises.
The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hamditi), over disagreements over the RSF’s integration into the army. The conflict has led to tens of thousands of deaths, and both groups have been accused of atrocities.
Sudan is deeply divided, with the army controlling the north and east, while the RSF holds significant territory in Darfur and the south.
