Namibia will power the oil refinery it plans to build in the city of Walvis Bay using South African nuclear technology.
Thanks to the reactor to be installed on the Namibian coast, 300,000 barrels of oil can be processed daily, providing both thermal and electrical energy to the refinery.
Nuclear project management company Stratek Global stated:
“This project is a transformative step toward energy sovereignty not only for Namibia but also for Sub-Saharan African regions, where over 600 million people still lack access to electricity.”
The company will also be responsible for supplying interim power during the construction and initial phases.
The refinery is also a critical component of the integrated Green Energy Complex planned for Walvis Bay.
Stratek Global Chairman Kelvin Kemm noted that while most nuclear power plants today require an ocean or large lake for cooling, their High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor technology eliminates that need.
