The death toll from mpox in Uganda has risen to 10 after four more fatalities were reported in the past five days, health authorities confirmed on Monday.
The Ministry of Health also announced that 156 new infections were registered during the same period, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,571 since the outbreak began six months ago.
Of the 19 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, 17 were recorded in Wakiso District, one in the capital Kampala, and another in Lira. These areas have seen the highest concentration of cases, highlighting the ongoing challenge of containing the spread.
In response to the growing outbreak, the Ugandan government, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health partners, has intensified efforts to curb the spread of the disease. Measures include enhanced surveillance, improved case management, and a wide-ranging public health campaign aimed at educating the public about symptoms and preventive actions.
Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, is primarily spread through close contact between individuals. While the disease generally presents with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, it can lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations.
Health officials have urged communities to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures as the country continues its fight against the virus.
